Nutrition Podcast Focuses on NI’s Tri-Sector ‘Universal Basic Food’ Concept

Our current food system is failing us.

One in seven Americans face food insecurity, while roughly 40 percent of manufactured foods goes to waste. Ten to 20 percent of produced food actually reaches hungry stomachs.

But what if we could change the system, to ensure that every person had healthy, desired food in their stomach, three times a day?

NewImpact’s Universal Basic Food utility concept would provide high-quality, nutritious food for everyone — for free. And it’s a system that’s designed to pay for itself.

In this “Nutrition Without Compromise” podcast, NewImpact Founder and CEO Jens Molbak discusses with Corinna Bellizzi the potential benefits of a tri-sector food utility model that could help repair our damaged food system, while also solving a lot of other problems. Jens and Corinna dive deep into program details, challenge assumptions, address skeptics, and discuss the following topics:

  • How the food utility model is built to serve both purpose (ensure quality food for all) and profitability, with built-in incentives for markets and organizations to participate in the program.

  •  A walk-through demo preview of the app proto-type, showing the ease with which users would choose and redeem nutritious food items—a hassle-free, seamless process usable by everyone.

  • How program designers are ensuring accessibility (retail access close to public transportation) and inclusivity (awareness of cultural and diverse dietary needs.)

  • The wrap-around potential for additional resources—such as recipes, nutrition courses, and cooking classes—provided by social sector organizations.

  • Estimated long-term savings to health care systems, as well as the environmental benefits of reduced food waste.

We invite you to listen to this enlightening conversation, and consider what resources you or your organization might contribute to a similar program in your community. As we expand this pilot, we are looking for innovators, testers, food system experts, social sector organizations and private sector retailers to join us in making an impact and transforming hunger outcomes nationwide.
